Premier DGU, part of the United Glass Group, has taken a significant step toward automation and efficiency with the installation of the Glaston VARIO FLEX insulating glass unit (IGU) line, the first of its kind in the UK. Based in Exeter, Premier DGU specializes in the high-volume production of double- and triple-glazed units, serving the growing demand for energy-efficient glazing solutions.
After United Glass Group acquired the 40-person company in September 2024, CEO Mark Harrison and founder Barry Clarke set out to boost capacity and modernize production. The newly installed VARIO FLEX line automates the entire IGU process, from gas filling to sealing, and accommodates triple-glazed units with varying cavity widths and depths, using both flexible warm-edge and rigid spacers. Despite limited factory space, Glaston successfully installed the line within a small footprint, completing setup over a four-week period in April 2025.
The new line produces fully finished IG units in just over 60 seconds, achieving exceptional speed, accuracy, and consistency. Operators have praised its user-friendly interface and precise software, following comprehensive training. Harrison highlighted the partnership’s success, noting Glaston’s strict adherence to timelines and dedicated on-site support.
This investment marks a major leap forward for Premier DGU and United Glass Group, reinforcing their leadership in automated glass manufacturing. With enhanced capacity and advanced triple-glazing capabilities, the group is now poised to meet increasing market demand for high-performance, sustainable glass solutions across the UK.
