The Orbit: A Landmark of Bold Design and Sustainability in Athens

The Orbit in Athens

The Orbit in Athens is a landmark project that showcases how bold design and advanced technology can reshape the urban landscape. Designed by LIANOU CHALVATZIS ARCHITECTS in collaboration with I & A Vikelas & Associate Architects, the development transformed an abandoned structure into a contemporary office complex and tech hub. The nine-storey building spans a gross surface of 40,000 sq.m., covering an entire city block along a plot inclined mainly along the east-west axis.

Initially conceived in 2004, with the shell completed by 2010, the building underwent a full redesign in 2018. Two parallel office wings were unified through a central circulation core, creating flexible layouts and expansive outdoor areas on every floor.

Bold interventions include cantilevered balconies of 8 meters and terrace bridges of 22 meters, complemented by roof gardens, planted terraces, and vertical gardens at secondary stairwells. Continuous horizontal aluminium fins provide shading while highlighting the architectural rhythm.

Certified LEED v4 Platinum and awarded WiredScore Gold, The Orbit combines sustainability, connectivity, and high-quality workspaces. ETEM’s E45, E75, and E85 systems enabled its thermally efficient façades and curtain walls, demonstrating how architectural ambition paired with advanced materials can leave a lasting mark on the skyline.
