ML System is setting a new benchmark in the glass industry with the execution of Europe’s largest Building-Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) project, a high-profile collaboration with the renowned Renzo Piano Building Workshop for the healthcare sector in Greece. At the heart of the project is a massive delivery of over 17,500 m² of photovoltaic glass modules, seamlessly integrated into the building envelopes of three new public hospitals located in Komotini, Thessaloniki, and Sparta.
Glass as Energy Infrastructure
This project redefines the role of glass in architecture, not merely as a transparent skin, but as an energy-producing, multifunctional façade element. ML System’s BIPV technology transforms glass into an active surface capable of harvesting solar power while meeting demanding architectural and safety standards. These advanced modules merge aesthetics with performance, enabling hospitals to function as sustainable, self-sufficient buildings without compromising on design.

Renzo Piano’s Signature: Light, Transparency, and Integration
The hospitals are designed by the internationally acclaimed Renzo Piano Building Workshop, led by Renzo Piano–Pritzker Prize laureate, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, and life senator of Italy. The choice of integrated photovoltaic glass aligns with Piano’s commitment to light-filled, sustainable architecture. The BIPV modules become part of the visual and structural identity of the buildings, not add-ons.
A Global Health Investment with Local Impact
The investment is part of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Global Health Initiative, a program supporting the transformation of healthcare infrastructure around the world. Construction is led by AVAX, with project management by Hill International. The combination of international expertise and cutting-edge glass technology is central to the project’s success.

Strategic Growth in Photovoltaic Glass
ML System was selected for this project based on several decisive advantages: its proven technological edge, comprehensive safety certifications, track record in international-scale implementations, and ability to meet aggressive timelines. The scale of the project also nearly doubles ML System’s BIPV order portfolio to 40,000 m², solidifying its position as a European leader in photovoltaic glass solutions.
This project is not just an architectural achievement, it is a turning point for the glass industry, proving that architectural glass can be beautiful, durable, and a clean energy source at once.
