EXTECH: Celebrating 50 Years of Innovation and Shaping the Built Environment

In 2025, EXTECH/Exterior Technologies Inc. will mark a significant milestone: its 50th anniversary.

Founded in 1975 as Industrial Air and Light Inc., a subsidiary of the Voegele Company, a family-owned roofing business in Pittsburgh, EXTECH has evolved into a leading manufacturer of skylights, windows, canopies, translucent walls, and custom facade systems.

The company’s roots lie in serving the industrial sector with windows, skylight systems, and products supporting Voegele’s contracting work. Its initial foray into the market revolved around two innovative industrial window designs: a sliding window and a top-hinged window. Securing patents for both designs laid the foundation for future expansion.

A pivotal moment arrived with the introduction of fiberglass panel daylighting systems. This breakthrough ultimately paved the way for EXTECH’s strategic shift towards architectural polycarbonate panels, signaling a commitment to cutting-edge materials and design solutions.

Over the decades, EXTECH has consistently embraced innovation, securing over 20 patents and developing a diverse portfolio of systems for a broad spectrum of industries and applications. This dedication to pushing the boundaries of design and functionality remains at the core of the company’s mission.

“We believe adopting new technologies is essential to creating superior product design, and we pledge to deliver our best work through onsite fabrication, constant education and close client partnerships,” states company president Kevin Smith.

However, technology alone is not enough. Smith emphasizes the importance of collaboration and creativity in bringing these technologies to life. “But what makes the technology and materials come to life is the collaborative, creative approach vital to producing beautiful, functional and healthy designs. Working alongside owners, architects, contractors and other highly skilled and talented professionals to impact the built environment is both humbling and satisfying.”

As EXTECH looks forward to its next 50 years, it remains committed to fostering these collaborative relationships, driving innovation, and shaping the built environment with impactful and sustainable solutions. The 50th anniversary serves as a testament to the company’s resilience, adaptability, and unwavering dedication to excellence in architectural design and technology. We look forward to seeing what the next chapter holds for this innovative company.
